Evidence shows that students who attend school regularly
- achieve better grades
- perform more successfully on tests
- are more successful after high school graduation, and
- become responsible, productive citizens.
Through work with the school districts in Jackson County, the attendance specialists at Southern Oregon Education Service District strive to promote strong school attendance and develop a plan for students to succeed in the education system. The attendance specialists work to help get students who have dropped out back into school or some form of educational program that will allow them to be successful today and in their futures.

The general philosophy of the attendance specialists is, first and foremost, to attempt to befriend students in an effort to help them be successful educationally. Approaching students positively and in a manner which portrays willingness to help them overcome any obstacle that has created a barrier to success, seems to be more effective than other possible methods. Another essential component of attendance specialists' day-to-day work is to ensure that the basic needs of the students are being met, in order for them to be able to focus in the classroom and on their schoolwork, instead of on their unmet needs. There are two full-time attendance specialists working on attendance issues in the following school districts: Medford, Ashland, Central Point, Rogue River, Butte Falls, Phoenix-Talent, and Prospect.
