The SOESD Newsletter Changes:
Because Learning Matters
Yes, we are now printing the newsletter in color. Is this an expensive luxury? Hardly, by cutting our distribution list (we will use email to send the newsletter to all of our own employees) we will able to stay within last years budget and actually cut that budget by half for next year. Still need to be convinced about the value of color?
Here are some good answers from the HP people for anyone who asks "why color.”
First of all, color engages. A Loyola study shows that color can increase recognition as much as 80 percent.
Color also informs. Color can improve readership by 40 percent and accelerate learning up to 78 percent, according to Researcher David Embry. It can also improve comprehension by up to 73 percent, according to communication expert Virginia Johnson.
Finally, color persuades, by increasing participation as much as 42 percent, as shown in study on phone directory ads. Check out all the reasons and watch the HP demos at:

Engaging, informing and persuading sums up what we believe a newsletter is all about. But our new format is more than just color. We also want to get you the information you want in a format that make sense. So, instead of publishing full articles that may or may not be of interest to any one reader, we are providing a menu of information, stories and events – letting you choose which one or ones you want more out more about. By linking the menu items in the Learning Matters newsletter to the full story on our web site we save you time and us money because we can print and mail a slimmer newsletter.
Choice of Format:
We know that some of you would rather watch the news rather than read it. So, we give the choice of watching stored segments of our Learning Matters video news stories which air Fridays during the 6PM Channel 10 News show. Last year SOESD formed a partnership with KTVL to provide a weekly information feature highlighting the issues of local education. Airing Fridays at 6pm on Channel 10 News, Learning Matters covers the issues affecting schools, profiles teachers and administrators who do outstanding work, highlights school programs that are succeeding and captures and shares the excellent efforts of student and teacher for whom learning really does matter.
So to engaging, informing and persuading we add ease of use and choice of format. Simply click on the Learning Matters Button on the front page of our web site and you will be transported to the full texts linked to each of the “menu items” or your choice of all our stores Video Learning Matters segments.
