School Improvement – Does that mean CHANGE?!
By Cynda S. Rickert, Director of School Improvement
“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”
The SOESD School Improvement Team began our year together by looking more closely at the meaning of our name, “School Improvement.” We agreed that school improvement requires continuous, purposeful, growth. We asked ourselves the question “How do we best help our schools continually, purposefully, grow?” We found the answer to be one simple word that is anything but simple to do: CHANGE!
Our next step was to determine where change begins so that we would know where to start our work. We discovered “change begins with me!” In order for us to help our schools do their change work, we must first look at ourselves to make sure we are being "the change we wish to see.” The SOESD School Improvement Team is committed to continuous, purposeful, growth for ourselves, so that we will bring, to our schools, the continuous purposeful growth that is needed in order to help all students be successful.
Accountability is the key to school improvement. In order to be more accountable, the SOESD School Improvement Team studied effective presentations models all of last year. From this work, the team created protocols that would be used with our schools to insure the best results. These protocols are based on the latest research around staff development and are tailored to the school’s needs based on their most recent data.
The SOESD School Improvement Team offers a wide array of services to our schools. We are comprised of three departments:
- CTE – Career and Technical Education
- Curriculum and Assessment
- Migrant/ELL – English Language Learners.
Additionally, we have a team of people who support school-wide systems work, including PBS – Positive Behavior Support, the Attendance Initiative , CIP – Continuous Improvement Plan, SEC – Surveys of Enacted Curriculum, New Teacher/Mentoring, and Data Driven/ Research Based School Improvement.
Your SOESD School Improvement Team looks forward to continuously improve the work we do so that we can better meet your needs and serve you in our common quest of helping all students be successful!
