Southern Oregon Success (SORS)

As part of its service to the community, SOESD is the host and fiscal agent for Southern Oregon Success, a region-wide collaboration weaving together the talent, expertise and resources of the entire community to promote the health, academic and life success of our children, youth and families.

We envision a community in which:

  • children, youth, and their families are supported and successful at home, in school, and their community;
  • children are healthy and ready for kindergarten;
  • youth graduate from high school and college ready for success in work, life, and community

Weā€™re a collaboration of all levels of education, health care, mental health care, human services, public safety and workforce development in Jackson and Josephine counties.

Our partner organizations began coming together in 2011 with leadership from SOESD, Rogue Workforce Partnership and the Gordon Elwood Foundation.Ā  We have evolved into a collective impact initiative for our region, using vital information from the Adverse Childhood Experiences study (ACEs) to raise awareness of trauma as a root cause of so much of what children, families, schools and communities struggle with. We also work to intentionally build resilience in our children, families, schools and communities.

Our focus is a two-generation approach to helping all children and families in our region thrive.

Our goal is to make sure every child in our region has an equitable chance to enter Kindergarten ready to thrive.

Strong families, thriving children.

For detailed information on how we are working to meet this goal, please check out this report on the Southern Oregon Early Childhood Support Network.

Southern Oregon Success seeks to be a diverse, inclusive, and equitable collaboration where all employees, partners and volunteers, whatever their gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation or identity, education or disability, feels valued and respected.

Aces & Resilience

Southern Oregon Success is the regional coordinator for work in ACEs (the Adverse Childhood Experiences study) and Resilience, focusing on helping Jackson and Josephine Counties develop a common understanding, vocabulary and approach to challenges across all sectors.

Breakthroughs from the Adverse Childhood Experiences study on how brain development occurs and the impacts of trauma on health and social skills have led to innovative and highly effective ā€œtrauma-informedā€ approaches in education, human services, public safety and workforce development to help build resilience in children, families and communities.

Weā€™re committed to making Southern Oregon a ā€œtrauma-informedā€ region.

With financial support from two of our local Coordinated Care Organizations, AllCare and Jackson Care Connect, as well as from the SOESD, our local school districts, Options, SOELS, La Clinica, Rogue Community Health and Siskiyou Community Health, our ACEs and Resilience effort is providing trauma-informed training sessions and events at no cost to schools, agencies, businesses and community groups.

OurĀ Southern Oregon ACEs Training Team has presented over 500 training sessions to just under to 17,000 people across all sectors in Jackson and Josephine Counties since May of 2016.

In addition, the team has developed a follow-up workshop in Self-Regulation & Resilience, going deeper into the crisis in self-regulation we are seeing in our children, families and schools and offering specific tools to increase self-regulation and resilience skills.
